Define (a) Raw material (b) by-products (c) product?
A raw material is the starting material which may have a different form, shape and purity level than what is needed in a final product and hence needs some processing. Examples: Cocoa beans, coffee beans, tea leaves, many ores for metal processing, cotton, crude petroleum and so on.
By-products are products of the process or processes that are employed to convert the raw materials into finished products. By prodcuts may or may not be finished products but usually have some economic value. Example: Molasses are a byproduct of sugar production and are used for production of alcohol.
A product is the result of one or more production processes applied on raw material(s). Cane sugar is a product of sugar cane, which is crushed, the juice filtered, heated to concentration, the color removed and finally the sugar crystallised. Paper is made from bamboo and the sugar cane residue called bagasse. Just an example.
Reply:Raw materials are inputs in a production process while product is the main output and by-product is unavoidable but useful additional output generated by the production process.
(a) A Raw Material is any material that can be processed/ worked upon by manual labor and/ or machines to turn into/ shaped into transformed into a a value added material for use to meet needs other than or different from what the raw material could have been alternatively used for.
(b) By-product is any material of useful value that gets additionally generated in the process of production/ manufacturing of the main value added finished material:.
(c) A product is the final value added material that is produced through a production process.
A product or by product generated from one production process may be directly consumed by households or used as raw material for another production process.
Reply:Raw materials are materials that are somehow obtained from the Earth (harvested, extracted or obtained from an animal). These raw materials are then transported to the factories where they are turned into other forms so that the needs of the market can be satisfied. For example, in the textile industry, cotton is a raw material and a cloth made of cotton is a product.
A by-product is an incidental or secondary product obtained during a manufacturing process or chemical reaction. For example, whey is a by-product from cheese manufacturing.
